Missing Lists After Transferring QuickBooks to a New Computer
Lists went missing after moving QuickBooks to a new computer or server? We recover customers, vendors, and items lost during file migration.
Request a QuoteMoving QuickBooks to a new computer should be straightforward — copy the file, open it, and get back to work. But it doesn’t always go that way. After the transfer, you open QuickBooks and discover that customers are missing, vendors have disappeared, or the Item List is incomplete. The file was fine on the old machine. Something went wrong in the move.
Common Causes of Migration List Loss
The Missing TLG Problem
The Transaction Log file (.TLG) sits alongside your company file (.QBW) and records every change made since the last backup. When you copy only the .QBW file to the new computer and leave the .TLG behind, any list changes recorded in the TLG are lost. If you added customers, modified vendor details, or updated item records after your last backup, those changes existed only in the TLG — and they didn’t make the trip.
This is the single most common cause of missing lists after a file transfer.
Version Auto-Upgrade
When you open a QuickBooks company file in a newer version of QuickBooks than the one that created it, the software performs an automatic file upgrade. This upgrade modifies the internal data structures to match the new version’s format. In most cases, the upgrade works fine. But when the file has any pre-existing corruption — even corruption that wasn’t causing visible problems in the old version — the upgrade process can expose or worsen it. List pointers that were slightly damaged but functional in the old version may break completely during the conversion.
Incomplete File Copy
Large QuickBooks files can be several gigabytes. If the copy process was interrupted — network timeout, disk full, USB drive disconnected — the resulting file is incomplete. QuickBooks may still open it, but internal data at the end of the file (which often includes list index structures) may be truncated or missing.
What to Do Before Giving Up
If you still have access to the old computer or the original file location:
- Find the .TLG file — look for a file with the same name as your company file but with a .TLG extension. If it’s there, copy it to the same directory as the .QBW file on the new computer.
- Check for the .ND file — this is the network descriptor file. Copying it along with the .QBW and .TLG ensures multi-user configuration is preserved.
- Keep the original files — don’t delete anything from the old computer until the migration is confirmed successful.
When the Original Files Are Gone
If the old computer is already wiped, returned, or inaccessible, we can still work with what you have. The .QBW file contains the vast majority of your data. Even without the TLG, the list entries are usually still present in the company file — they just need their index pointers repaired.
