Sage 50 Canadian Quantum to Pro or Premium Downgrade
Downgrade your Canadian edition Sage 50 Quantum to Pro or Premium. Full preservation of Simply Accounting data, bilingual settings, CRA tax data, and Canadian payroll.
Request a QuoteSage 50 Canadian edition has a lineage that stretches back to the early days of Canadian small business computing. Originally released as Simply Accounting in 1985 by Computer Associates, it became the dominant accounting package for Canadian businesses long before Sage acquired it. If you are running Sage 50 Canadian Quantum today, there is a good chance your data file has roots in Simply Accounting — and carries years or even decades of Canadian accounting history that is essential to your operations.
Downgrading from Quantum to Pro or Premium preserves all of that history. The Canadian-specific features your business depends on — bilingual interface, GST/HST handling, CRA reporting, provincial payroll — are standard across every Canadian edition. They are not Quantum add-ons, and they do not go away when you move to a lower tier.
The Simply Accounting Heritage
The Canadian edition has its own product history, distinct from the US version:
- Simply Accounting (1985-2012) — the original Canadian product by Computer Associates, later ACCPAC
- Sage Simply Accounting (2006-2013) — Sage-branded transitional period
- Sage 50 Canadian Edition (2013-present) — current product name
Many Canadian businesses still refer to the software as “Simply Accounting” in conversation, even though the product has been Sage 50 for over a decade. Files that originated in Simply Accounting Basic, Pro, or Premium were migrated forward through each version, accumulating data along the way.
Like the US edition, the upgrade path often pushed businesses to higher tiers than they needed. If a Simply Accounting Premium user was upgraded to Sage 50 by their reseller and placed on Quantum because it was the “best” edition, they may have been paying Quantum pricing for years without ever using a single Quantum-exclusive feature.
Canadian Tax Data That Transfers Completely
The tax landscape in Canada is more complex than many other jurisdictions, with federal, provincial, and territorial taxes interacting in ways that require careful configuration. All of this configuration is preserved during the downgrade.
GST/HST/PST/QST
Canadian sales tax is a multi-layered system that varies by province:
- GST (Goods and Services Tax) — federal 5% tax applied across Canada
- HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) — combined federal/provincial tax in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and PEI
- PST (Provincial Sales Tax) — separate provincial tax in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba
- QST (Quebec Sales Tax) — Quebec’s provincial sales tax, administered separately from GST
Your Sage file contains tax codes for every combination relevant to your business, linked to the correct tax agencies with appropriate rates. It also contains input tax credit (ITC) tracking data used when filing your GST/HST returns with the Canada Revenue Agency. All of this — tax codes, rates, agency assignments, ITC history, and remittance records — carries over to Pro or Premium without modification.
CRA Reporting and Compliance
Canadian businesses have specific reporting obligations to the Canada Revenue Agency. Your Sage file holds the data needed to meet these obligations:
- T4 slips — annual employee earnings summaries, including CPP contributions, EI premiums, and income tax deducted
- T4 Summary — employer-level aggregate of all T4 slips filed for the year
- T5 slips — investment income reporting (dividends, interest) for applicable businesses
- ROE (Record of Employment) — data needed to generate ROEs when employees leave, used for EI benefit calculations
- T2200 declarations — work-from-home expense support data (relevant since 2020)
All CRA reporting data is standard across every Canadian edition. Generating T4 slips in Pro works exactly the same as in Quantum.
Quebec-Specific Compliance (RL-1, QPP, QPIP)
If your business operates in Quebec or has employees working in Quebec, you have additional provincial reporting requirements:
- RL-1 slips — Quebec’s equivalent of the T4, filed with Revenu Quebec rather than CRA
- QPP (Quebec Pension Plan) — Quebec’s replacement for CPP, with its own contribution rates and earnings ceiling
- QPIP (Quebec Parental Insurance Plan) — employer and employee premiums for Quebec’s parental leave program
- Quebec provincial income tax — separate withholding tables from federal
These Quebec-specific features are built into the Canadian edition across all tiers. They are not Quantum features and they are fully preserved in the downgrade.
Canadian Payroll Considerations
Canadian payroll is governed by both federal and provincial/territorial employment standards, creating a configuration environment that is significantly different from the US edition. Your Sage file contains:
- CPP/QPP contributions — Canada Pension Plan (or Quebec Pension Plan) calculations, including the employer match and annual maximum pensionable earnings
- EI premiums — Employment Insurance, with the employer premium set at 1.4 times the employee premium
- Provincial/territorial income tax — separate withholding calculations for the province or territory of employment
- Workers compensation — WCB/WSIB premiums and classifications by province
- Vacation pay accruals — statutory vacation pay percentages by province (ranging from 4% to 6%)
- Statutory holiday pay — general holiday pay calculations per provincial rules
- Group benefits — RRSP matching, health and dental plan deductions, taxable benefit calculations
Every one of these payroll components transfers to Pro or Premium. Canadian payroll is core functionality, not an edition-specific upgrade.
Bilingual Interface and Reports
The bilingual English/French interface is a defining feature of Sage 50 Canadian edition that distinguishes it from the US product. Businesses in Quebec, New Brunswick, and other regions with French-speaking staff or clients rely on this capability for:
- Menu and navigation in French or English — user-selectable language preference
- Bilingual invoices and statements — customer-facing documents with French text
- French-language reports — financial statements and management reports in French
- Bilingual chart of accounts — account descriptions in both languages
This bilingual capability is standard in all Canadian editions, including Pro. It is not a Quantum feature. Your language preferences, bilingual document templates, and French-language report configurations carry over completely.
What Gets Removed in the Downgrade
The only capabilities removed are those exclusive to Quantum:
- Serialized inventory — individual serial number tracking per unit
- LIFO/FIFO lot costing — specific identification costing methods
- Multi-entity consolidation — combined financials across companies
- Advanced budgeting — multi-year and consolidated budget plans
- Workflow approvals — transaction approval chains
- Progress billing — staged billing with retainage
- More than 5 concurrent users — Quantum allows up to 40
- Granular role-based security — field-level permissions
For a Canadian business doing standard bookkeeping, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and tax compliance, none of these Quantum features affect daily operations.
Choosing Between Canadian Pro and Premium
Sage 50 Canadian Pro covers all core accounting functions and supports up to 5 users. It includes full Canadian payroll, all tax compliance features, and the bilingual interface. For most Canadian small businesses, Pro provides everything needed.
Sage 50 Canadian Premium adds departmental accounting, more detailed security controls, and industry-specific editions. If your business tracks financials by department or location, or if you need to restrict user access at a more detailed level, Premium is the better choice.
Both editions support every Canadian tax, payroll, and compliance feature your business requires.
